The Symposium
Logistics

All conference events will be held on the campus of the University of California-Berkeley. Day 1 conference sessions will be held in the Pauley Ballroom in the Martin Luther King Student Center. Days 2 and 3 will be held in the adjacent Zellerbach Auditorium. The Amazing Light Gala will be held at the historic Rotunda Building in downtown Oakland. Both the campus venues and the Rotunda Building are convenient to public transportation.

Conference speakers and special guests should contact Julia Loving at for hotel arrangements. Other conference attendees are responsible for making their own arrangements for travel, accommodations, and meals.

Berkeley is served by two major airports: San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK).

Weather in October in Berkeley is beautiful. Temperatures range from 71˚ during the day to 53˚ at night. However, nights can be chilly when the fog rolls in so bring a sweater or jacket.

Following is a list of hotels, airport shuttles, sources of general transportation information, parking information, and restaurants in and around Berkeley. We recommend making your reservations early as October is a very busy time in Berkeley.

For further information, there is a very informative Web site about Berkeley with restaurant lists, shopping, and things to do. Go to www.visitberkeley.com/.

Parking

Parking in Berkeley can be extremely difficult. Below you will find some information on parking near the campus.

The Center Street Parking Lot is located downtown at 2025 Center Street between Milvia and Shattuck. It also has an entrance on Addison Street to better serve the theater and arts district. This garage is convenient to downtown shops, theaters, restaurants and other businesses and cultural attractions. Merchants participating in the Downtown Berkeley Association provide parking validation coupons for patrons. Center Street Garage is open from 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday. From 5 p.m. on you can park until closing for $5.00. Center Street Garage also provides two charging stations for electric vehicles on the 4th floor.

The Sather Gate Garage is located two blocks from the UC Berkeley Campus. One-half block west of Telegraph Avenue, with entrances on both Durant Avenue and Channing Way, Sather Gate Garage is convenient to shops, restaurants, Telegraph Avenue and the UC campus. The old multi-meter system has been replaced by central cashiers and automated pay machines at which you pay before exit. Substantial discounts are given with merchant validations, and over 80 Telegraph area merchants and street vendors participate in the Sather Gate Garage Validation Program. Since the installation of the new equipment in October, there has been ample parking. New elevators, improved lighting and higher levels of customer service are now available. Sather Gate Garage is open from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, on Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. except holidays.

Oxford Street Lot is located between Allston Way and Kittredge. The entrance is on Kittredge. This lot is particularly convenient to the UC Campus, Haas Pavilion, downtown, movies, theaters, shops, restaurants and the Berkeley Public Library. A parking attendant is available to answer questions, assist you and take payment. Oxford Lot is open from 9 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, except holidays. The evening rate of $2.00 goes into effect at 6:00 p.m.
