Young Scholars Competition

The 18 finalists will compete on the second day of the symposium (Friday morning, October 7) by presenting their ideas and research results (in 15-minute talks and a 10-minute Q&A session following each talk) in three parallel sections before three panels of judges. These panels will consist of distinguished members from the program committee. The panels will award three First Prizes of $20,000, three Second Prizes of $10,000, and three Third Prizes of $5,000, one Prize in each category for each of the three topical areas. The Prizes will be presented at the celebratory banquet honoring Professor and Mrs. Townes on Saturday evening, October 8. The Prize Winners may be invited to submit chapters for possible inclusion in the subsequent book, a volume that is expected to convey the spirit of Charles Townes’ bold adventurousness in advancing the quest for deep understanding of existence.

The key judging criteria are:

  1. Clear relevance to at least one of the three topical areas.
  2. Two criteria-of-merit that are weighted and will be used both in the initial selection for invitations and for the competition itself on Friday morning, October 7, 2005:
    • Demonstrated capability of the candidate based on previous research accomplishments.
    • Academic rigor, innovativeness, depth, power, and persuasiveness of the research.
  3. The likely positive impact of the research in transforming the quest of physics to reveal deep new insights into nature and to develop new tools to facilitate and advance this quest, as well as to create useful technological innovations.
